Prozac is mostly used to cure Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), which supposes a persistent and pronounced depression, affecting daily activity. The doctor who chooses fluoextine in long term treatments must periodically reevaluate the drug's utility for each patient.

OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), characterized by persistence of thoughts, ideas, impulses or images (obsessions), which are repetitive, deliberated by the intentional behavior (compulsions), both being recognized as being excessive and irrational.

Fluoextine is an orally administrated anti-depressive. Chemically speaking, it is not related to other anti-depressives. The maximum daily dose must not exceed 80mg. For those with hepatic or renal insufficiency, the dosage should be smaller, and likewise for older people. The substance is not recommended for children, since safety and efficiency has not been established in their case. During pregnancy, fluoextine should be used only if necessary. There are effects, minor or major, upon the ability to drive or use other machines, so patients should pay extra care.
