Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a type of anxiety disorder with very distinct signs and symptoms. A person suffering with OCD symptoms has persistent thoughts and fears associated with repetitive behaviors, which typically result in a short-lived relief of anxiety.
Symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder often center on themes, such as a fear of getting contaminated by germs, or an over focus on order. OCD can become all consuming and even physically disabling. People who suffer from OCD have a poor quality of life. Both physiological and environmental factors can cause OCD. In addition to this an insufficient level of serotonin may contribute to the development of OCD.
The most common medication used in the treatment of OCD is serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs) which include drugs like Prozac, Zoloft etc. While they are helpful in dealing with the anxiety issues that comes with OCD, the drugs also have their OCD side effects.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a serious medical condition that requires coordinated treatment by an experienced psychiatrist.
