In a recent study researchers found that about 80% of pregnant women in the US reported taking some type of prescription or OTC drugs while pregnant. Researchers are concerned about antidepressants like Prozac issues with birth defects. They say it's important that more is done to determine the birth defect and birth injury risks before drugs are sold to the public.

The problem is that due to medical testing ethics laws, most drugs that are approved for use in the US are not tested on pregnant women before being sold to the public. Therefore, there is limited information on what effect many of these drugs will have if taken during pregnancy. Unfortunately, drugs linked to birth defect risks are typically discovered through post-market surveillance. Recently, a lawsuit was filed against makers of Topamax for delayed warnings about the potential risk of birth defects from antidepressants, especially SSRIs like Topamax and Prozac.

Many of us know depression side effects and how devastating they can be. What also can be terrible are the medication side effects for treating depression. A common prescribed pill for depression is Prozac. Prozac can increase suicidal thoughts in certain individuals; which can have awful consequences.

Prozac can diminish sexual drive and even create changes in your appetite. Those all sound like odd side effects but when a pill alters your brain all sorts of things can occur. It is always best to seek out other non-medicinal options before choosing to start taking a pill for depression. Maybe the solution can be found naturally or with therapy. It all depends on the person with depression but if problems are persistent; remember that medications like Prozac can have strong side effects.

Antidepressant drugs like Prozac and Zoloft are believed to help improve the mood of people who suffer from depression, and they have been prescribed liberally by doctors around the world for patients with this disorder. As with most any drug, there are Zoloft and Prozac side-effects that can in some cases be serious. That is why they should be prescribed carefully and only to patients that suffer from major depression.

However, a recent study by the University of Manitoba, Canada found that more the 25% of people who currently taking these drugs had no legitimate reason to be prescribed the drugs in the first place. This is a dangerous precedent due to the fact that patients can end up suffering from the side effects of the drugs when they were not necessary to begin with.
